We travelled light to Merthyr with just 18 boys making the trip. However, we were treated to a fantastic game of rugby. The facilities were first class and the boys got a chance to play at the home ground of Premiership team Merthyr. The 4,500 seater stadium was full to the rafters with enthusiasm and our hosts gave us a fantastic welcome. The President of the WSRU was there to watch too and address the boys and girls before the game.
I think it’s fair to say that it finally clicked for us on Saturday and both the forwards and backs did their jobs brilliantly. Our boys played some really exciting rugby and got the ball wide at every opportunity. They did the hard stuff up front too and had to make a ton of tackles to keep the Merthyr team at bay. Merthyr didn’t let us have it all our own way through and put up a decent fight and also played some lovely rugby. We managed to keep our noses in front and had a small lead at halftime.
The belief was there and we kept Merthyr under pressure for the second half to come out on top winners at 45-25, much to the joy of the coaches and travelling support. The hard work is now starting to pay off! The boys have been so close over the past few weeks and it was an absolute joy to see it go well on the field for them today.
We had a good sing-song on the bus on the way home as we reflected on our win. We were impressed with the boys’ song choices too, the songs included classics from Queen, The Killers and even a Michael Jackson classic, Billie Jean to boot.
We look forward to hosting Islwyn in the semi-final of the cup in a couple of weeks' time and will work hard in training with the boys so that we can make a good account of ourselves.
‘Till next time…
